Obtaining No-Cost Medical Records
Most states have laws that regulate how much health care providers can charge individuals for copies of their medical records. However, some states stipulate that these copies be provided at no-cost if needed to apply for a disability benefits program; in some cases this exemption extends to an applicant's representative.
The National Organization of Social Security Claims Representatives (NOSSCR) has compiled a list of the state statutes and regulations regarding the collection of fees for medical records. Please contact your SAMHSA HU SOAR Center Liaison for information about your state.
