my Social Security Account

What is my Social Security?

my Social Security is SSA’s free and secure online benefits portal that currently boasts over 17,000,000 users.

  • Users can request a replacement Social Security card
  • People who are working can track and verify their earnings and also get estimates about future benefits.
  • SSI/SSDI applicants can check the status of their application.

  • SSI/SSDI beneficiaries can change their address, enter or change their direct deposit information.
  • SSI/SSDI beneficiaries can quickly obtain a letter with proof of their benefits.
    • Recipients are often asked to show proof that they are receiving SSI/SSDI benefits via a letter from SSA (known as a "budget letter", "benefits letter", "proof of income letter", or a "proof of award letter“). Rather then waiting to receive this letter in the mail, recipients can obtain instantly online via a my  Social Security account!

Creating a my Social Security Account

  • Go to: https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/

  • Provide basic personal information and give answers to some easy questions that only you would know (for security purposes).

  • To complete the process, create a username and password that you will use to access your account.

Tips for SOAR Case Workers

  • SSI/SSDI applicants are only able to create a my Social Security account using their own personal information. You are not able to create or use accounts on behalf of other people, even with written permission.
  • For guidance on assisting an applicant, see our helpful flowchart: Creating a my Social Security Account for Applicants.
